Happy New Year 2010! I hope you are all doing well! I just began taking a class at my church, The Soul-Esteem Center, in Maryland Heights on Thursday evenings. It’s called Metaphysical Spirituality. I am really attracted to metaphysics, the study of what is beyond the appearance, the physical. It is a study of the mystical, or the nature of God, and of humankind’s relationship to the Divine. I really enjoyed my first class.
What really struck me is how we often have one foot in the spiritual realm and one in the human world. It just amazes me how one moment I can feel so calm and connected to God and the next I’m getting short-tempered with my kids. Can you relate? My first inclination is to get mad at myself for being so emotionally weak-willed.
However, the more that I learn about life and my relationship to it, the more I have begun to emphathize with my human self and forgive myself for my reactions. I read in Esther and Jerry Hicks’ book, The Astonishing Power of Emotions, “We want you to know that whenever you are choosing to think unkind thoughts about yourself (or anyone), you are counter to your Inner Being, who only feels love for you. When you degrade, scold, or criticize yourself, you are out of alignment with the greater part of yourself,
and there are no greater crippling thoughts than those of self-denigration.
When you give yourself the benefit of the doubt, you realign with who-you-really-are.” So I guess it will really help me to pay attention to my negative thoughts and curb them as much as possible. Ever notice how difficult it is to remain ground and centered when we are triggered by un-happy children, over-tired spouses, a difficult situation at work, etc.?
Well, I will continue to find my peace within and nurture my relationship with God so that I might fulfill my purpose, to love, give and serve (Phylis Clay-Sparks, our reverand, says this is everyone’s purpose no matter what they DO for a living, and I believe this). And on those days when I’m tired and vulnerable and I lash out at a loved one, I will forgive myself for my human-ness. I am looking for incremental improvements in my behavior, not overnight miracles.
I’ll leave you with another quote from The Astonishing Power of Emotions: “To show someone how to align with Source–in the face of circumstances that do not easily inspire it–is the most valuable guidance that you could ever offer to another.
That is the only guidance you ever intended to offer your children: the power to guide their own lives.” I think that is powerful!
